The Sony PSP really is a great handheld gaming console, many would say the best handheld console available but I will let you be the judge of that. The graphics engine is superb, handing fast motion games with ease. If you have a PSP you will be well aware that its not only a great game playing machine but a multi functional handheld device more than capable of playing videos, allowing music playback, a storage device for photos or other media. Not forgetting its built in Internet browser.
So what is firmware? Well put simply its the operating system that controls the inner workings of your PSP, similar to Windows on a PC. The firmware is stored in the flash ROM (read only memory).
The latest version PSP firmware at present is 3.70. Although it contains various security updates to try to keep the hackers at bay, it also contains a few new and great features. Do you use your PSP to watch UMD movies, well if you do you will now find a useful scene search function. One thing you have never been able to do is listen to music whilst flicking through your photos. Well Sony have finally listened and included that it to the latest update.
So how do you update the existing PSP Firmware. Well it’s an easy process that can be done a number of ways. The easiest and probably the safest way to update is via a new UMD game. When new games come out Sony incorporates updates with in the package of the UMD. Another way is to download the update to your computer from the official Sony website and transfer it to your PSP via a USB cable or a memory stick.
Just a quick word of caution about upgrading the firmware. If the power supply fails during the update it is possible to corrupt your PSP and render it useless. Make sure you perform updates with the PSP plugged in to the mains. Updating the PSP is relatively easy and can be performed by anyone with even limited knowledge.
So don’t be scared if you want to enjoy all of the latest features for your PSP download the latest firmware today.
